Powerplay and the Uncommon Man
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra was in a foul mood. The air conditioner had stopped functioning for the whole of three minutes. He found the heat very oppressive and unbearable.
The Uncommon Man(he could get interviews with anyone at any time) was watching the Chief Minister wipe perspiration from his forehead.
Sir , he said. I guess the heat is on.
Shut up and let me relax , said the visibly upset CM.
Sir , have you given a thought to what happens to people in Thane who have to bear 4 hours of power cut; or for that matter , the people in the Dombivli – Kalyan belt who don’t have electricity for 8 hours; then again what about people beyond, in the hinterlands of Maharashtra, who have to endure 16 hours of power cut.
I can’t do anything about it. Ask the energy minister.
But as the CM of the state don’t you feel you have a responsibility?
You know something, charity begins at home. I am only bothered about what happens to me and to my family.
But aren’t you looking for a solution?
Arre … jaoo de! I have another 2-3 years hopefully in the saddle. Besides I don’t know when the High Command will ask me to step down. So, you see, I am just biding my time. God willing, I should be able to pass this hot potato to somebody else!
So you are not going to do anything about it?
Well I have taken an important step.
What’s that?
It’s really simple. If you can’t change the road conditions, change the name of the road; if you can’t improve the facilities at a railway station/airport change their names. You
know , between you and me , a democracy is a government of the fools by the fools for the fools!
But isn’t it true that you can fool some of the people all the time , all the people some of the time , but not all the people all the time?
Well we guys have perfected the art.
Going back to the power situation:what are you doing about it?
Well, I have gone one step further. I have decided to add a couple of letters to my
own name.
And what would your name be from now on?
Kvilasrao Deshmukkh.
And who advised you on that?
K-Ekta , sorry , Ekta Kapoor, said the CMji.
